Co-ops – The saving of a community

- Bill Kelly – Meitheal Midwest and the Limerick Grocery Co-Operative.
- Maeve O’Hair and Mary Fogarty – The Cottage, Loughmore.
- Marcella Maher – Drombane – Upperchurch Energy Team
Following our previous events various topics have come to the fore. Among these has been the need to support local producers and businesses. The founding of the co-op movement in the 1880’s by Horace Plunkett was the genesis of the spread of the agricultural co-operative in Ireland. From this many other co-operatives have been successful such as the credit unions, fishing co-operatives, craft co-operatives etc.
The essence of the co-operative movement is in the social capital gain for the community – people working together for the greater good of the members and their community.
What do YOU think??
